By: The Traveling Golfer
We know that for most of you in the more northern parts of North America you are still anxiously awaiting your escape from the long cold winter. We also know that many have gone and returned and are already looking forward to another escape later in the year. That is what we are talking about…and if you are planning to come to the 8th running of the Golf & Blues Mississippi Style guess what? The Traveling Golfer will be there with you!
This event is already shaping up to be the best ever. The gang at Golf Packages Etc. a division of Southern Golf Tours, has been diligently working on all elements of the itinerary including lining up some great local Mississippi Blues artists to accompany our celebrity guest host, the one and only, Chuck Jackson, lead vocalist of the Downchild Blues Band.
The Traveling Golfer will not be the only golf entity on the scene in Biloxi, Mississippi for the week of October 14th – 18th. Ottawa based Flagstick Golf has teamed up with the regions #1 Blues/Rock station DAWG FM and we should have a group coming from there as well. Outside of that there are already 20 plus confirmed participants.
This is how it will all go down…
The event will kick off at the IP Casino’s Chill Bar, it is one bar that rocks all week long and on the Sunday afternoon we’re gonna have a southern “Hey Y’all” meet and greet with a few tunes, a few drinks and few appetizers. No doubt this will linger into the night for some!
Hopefully recovered from the night before, you will want to be ready to hit the links Monday morning as this is the best time of the year to play on the Coast. Bermuda grasses will be in their prime coming off of a long hot summer. I will go out on limb and say that it will be from mid-70 to 80’s. Monday morning we will get you warmed up on Hickory Hills Golf Club. This will be your round to get the kinks out. Fairly wide open but the greens are always a test…do not be on the back of the 8th green!
Monday evening you will be escorted by motor coach, because we know that most of you will drink and we don’t want you to drive, to the infamous Shed BBQ & Blues Joint where there will be blues and you will be treated some world renowned BBQ as you may have seen on Drive-In’s, Diners and Dives.
We will tee it up again on Tuesday at Shell Landing Golf Club. The Davis Love III design is the Traveling Golfer’s favorite on the Coast and is a treat for anyone from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. That evening you will again be escorted by motor coach but on this night you will be out on the Gulf of Mexico for a sunset blues and booze cruise. Escorted again, yes! We know your type.
FREE day Wednesday…but for anyone that wants to golf we can certainly set you up. Some will need to recover from the night before but for those who are ready to roll there are many things to see and do on the Mississippi Gulf Coast! So many it is best for you to check out the attractions, shopping and casino’s at the Gulf Coast website – http://www.gulfcoast.org/attractions/
By the evening you will be ready for some relaxing Blues at Shaggy’s on the Beach. No motor coach this evening because who knows where y’all will be coming from. Only a short drive from the IP Casino so if you drink too much you would be best to cab it!
Thursday morning we will be teeing it up at The Oaks Golf Club another Traveling Golfer favorite with as good a collection of par 3’s as you will find anywhere and all round sneaky tough! This evening you will be on your own, so you just might want to explore what the area has to offer. We might suggest Ocean Springs – there are so many bars and restaurants to choose from in this little community.
The grand golf finally will take place at the Jack Nicklaus designed Grand Bear Golf Club located just north of Gulfport and deep into a Desoto area forest. Nothing but pure golf in sight and a solid test from tee to green. That evening you will be hosted with a hoopla and the pomp and pageantry of a closing reception and awards dinner. Don’t worry, no red carpet and no jacket required!
Saturday is departure day, but if you want, arrangements can be made to stay an extra day or two. Or you may consider and evening or two in New Orleans, it’s only an hour away. For that matter you might want to consider New Orleans on the way in too!
The Traveling Golfer is looking forward to sharing this week with you!
