The Home of American Golf – Pinehurst

It seems like such a long time ago that we were at the Pinehurst Resort for IAGTO’s North American Golf Tourism Convention. That was 2016, time feels weird these days, almost as weird as the times that we are in.

When I saw the article in Links Newsletter a week or so ago it brought back fond memories of the time we spent in Pinehurst, perhaps memories that might never be duplicated. We want to share Links thoughts on what a Perfect Long Weekend there might look like, but off course the longer the stay the better with over 30 courses in the Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen areas to choose from.

A Pinehurst Putterboy trophy from our Convention Tournament sits proudly in my office as the team I captained won one of the two tournaments, we were on #8 and the other on #2.  To date I have yet to play the new #2. I have been assured by friends in high places down there that that will happen as soon as I can get my butt down there again.

Pinehurst and the entire regions history is one thing that few destinations can compete with.

2nd Hole – The most difficult hole in the 2005 US Open

Charm and your own personal memories are another thing. I remember reconnecting with my old friend Beverly, having a glass of Simi Chardonnay on the porch at the Resort. I remember having drinks and a fun dinner with friends from around the world at the Pinecrest Inn. I remember standing in what, I assume, were Payne Stewarts footsteps in front of a urinal at the Pinecrest Inn. Someone told me that I should look up, and sure enough, I see his signature on the wall. How else would it have gotten there?  Apparently the storied Pinecrest Inn was the celebratory spot after taking down Phil to win the 1999 US Open. Payne was my hero – RIP old friend.

Should you care to listen, in one of our most recent Traveling Golf Podcasts we talk all things Pinehurst Area including Mid-South Club, part of Talamore Resorts – one of my all-time favorite Arnold Palme courses and slightly, slightly beyond to one of my favorite courses in North America about an hour north – Tobacco Road.
